Who is this top notch fashion designer?

Here's a mind boggling puzzle for you, did you realise that LUG and SIGA backwards from Lug Von Siga it spells Gul Agis? Don’t worry I didn’t either! The Turkish fashion designer Gul Agis was born in Istanbul. She graduated from Bilkent University with a degree in English language and literature. She later on moved to Milan to study fashion design. She stimulated her way up and became a styling assistant for a top Italian Magazine. Her first collection was launched with her sister in London. At present she is an instructor at the ITU University –FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology New York) giving Fashion Art and Design lessons. Gul set up her own line "LUG VON SIGA" in 2009 and participated in Galata Fashion Festival for 3 times since.

The consideration behind this greatness

I was overly excited to see this collection as it was something I was not familiar with. The concept behind it and the style was definitely more structured and intense than I'm used to! But of course I did a little digging here and there as I wanted to examine everything about this staggering collection. I straight away discovered that Gul Agis got the inspiration for this A/W13 collection from the irrational beliefs of Turkish mirrors that hang on the wall with the effects of 3D; this was taken from broken mirrors bringing bad luck. She adapts this while using fragments of a broken mirror that can be seen on garments in the collection. I know you think, how am I supposed to wear this though? Never mind! Even though Gul Agis’ collection is very carefully constructed, the woman’s beautiful curves are still the highlight of most garments, especially the dresses. So you can get the fit of the ultimate sexy black dress but in a more sophisticated and flamboyant way, well I say so!

Garment shape, colours and materials

Gul Agis is known for her modern, strong and conceptual designs. She showcased monochrome colours with splashes of white, grey, black, ecru and fuchsia. She is a true Genius; I mean how can the inspiration of mirrors produce a collection so exceptional? This is where you can actually see that inspiration can come from absolutely anywhere!! This collection featured luxurious tailoring with fabrics like metallic leather, fur and cotton carefully revealing the story of this collection by rounding techno-modern fabrics and historical themes! Leather was Gul’s favourite material to work with as she mentioned it was a brand new technique for her and she loves to experiment. Isn’t that delightful? Detailed embellishments highlighted the uniqueness of this collection. You must be SUPER FABULOUS to even be caught wearing any of this! She included high collars and mirror embellishments.

We love a side order to an outfit

The Leather gloves were a significant accessory to the collection as all the models wore them; this and the mysterious eye covering hats reminds me of a detective, you know the ones in the old movies, the ones that would come on the screen and you’d suddenly hear the mission impossible theme tune! This complimented well as a whole because the first couple of garments walked to a secretive, spy theme tune. The trendy stiletto is the main style of shoe. It has become a fashionable accessory to add to an outfit to make it easily elegant, you don't even have to wear anything specific just put on your favourite stiletto and you're on your way. They go with dresses, skirts, trousers (especially), shorts and literally anything and I think that's why Gul Agis incorporated this into her collection. It's popular, wearable, and comfortable and sophisticated, what's not to love! These are definitely on my shopping list and what’s so great is that there is a vast variety to choose from!

To the make-up, it is very basic and natural which was a good idea to go with because the garments are so va-va-voom, and the natural make-up makes the garments the centre focus. As they say 'more is less'.

TRENDS

Of course there will be some seasonal similarities in collections however this monochrome trend has appeared multiple of times during the catwalks and it is not just a coincidence! Whether it is SS13 or AW13. This trend has been radically different from the recent but the designers love it and I’m not going to lie, I love it too. It’s easy to style but yet it can still be a statement piece. While wearing monochrome you don’t need to wear anything more amplified with it because it’s already loud enough. The trend appeared in several designer’s collection like: Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Pamella Roland and many more, the list is endless! Even off the catwalks fashionistas, celebrities, magazines – well basically everyone has been following the monochrome trend and I must say it is groovy, its revolutionary and so is Gul Agis for this extraordinary collection; The innovation is cray!
