Film Review: The Conjuring

A film to keep you clinging onto the edge of your seat

James Wan, who previously created Saw, Insidious and was responsible for glorifying the torture, porn genre in the 2000's but has he created possibly the most haunting film of 2013? Well, it's definitely in the top three.

The Conjuring takes the familiar elements of exorcism in your typical paranormal horror film and adds a deadly dash of disturbing mental anguish.

It's the type of movie to keep you clinging onto the edge of your seat with unexpected twists that spiral into one incredible film, not only does it play with your mind, it's also incredibly interesting for those who have a passion for the paranormal. Wan has done an excellent job with The Conjuring and it’s a perfect movie for anyone looking for a bit of excitement.

The Warrens

Horror fans may already recognise the Warrens, their cases have become very famous due to the real life events they had to experience. Lorraine Warren was born with the gift of being able to understand this certain type of paranormal activity and demonic presences which allowed her to figure out why some of the dead choose to stay around their homes and why their past may have forced them to become these so called 'demons'.

The Warrens were believed to be real life paranormal experts in the 70's who help those who may have been exposed to certain darkness in their home or within their family. Its lead to believe that The Conjuring is a case they both studied that was so petrifying they kept it in the dark until now.

The Conjuring - a 'true story'

Being based on a 'true story', The Conjuring starring Lili Taylor, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson and Ron Livingston automatically creates a terrifying experience for anyone who believes in demonology or these other intriguing interpretations of life after death. And well, if you’re a perfectly, happy family moving into a creepy looking house with a terrifying past in America, you should know that it's going to be a recipe for disaster.

A creepy mansion for sale; includes a creepy basement, a petrifying jack-in-the-box and an ancient wardrobe that isn't quite your entrance to Narnia.

Not exactly a peaceful home for a family of seven is it?

The Warrens (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) play the parts of real life demonologists and paranormal experts from the 70's, they were called to help a family who had been terrorized by a dark presence and become trapped in this petrifying case they could never recover from.

Lili Taylor does an exceptional job of playing the maternal character of the family and she makes the entire experience believable and terrifying; a happy housewife attempting to live her life normally and doing the job of protecting her children only to be the victim of, well I won’t spoil it for you…

This movie consists of a repetition of events such as the clocks stopping at 03:07am every morning and the house being filled with the stench of rotting bodies with added unexpected jump scares and a very good reason to never play hide and seek again.

Many events during the movie became predictable and repetitive but the little eerie moments produced a claustrophobic atmosphere which certainly changed the emotions of the audience and I can guarantee a very thrilling and exciting experience for any horror fan.

Overall, Wan has created a petrifying success and even I, a quiet teenager that gets terrified by the smallest things, enjoyed it very much and would recommend this film to anyone who has a passion for demonic adventures.
